Are you currently looking for independent contractor drivers?

Absolutely! We are always looking for qualified independent contractor drivers.

What type of trucks is Bolt looking for?

  • Non-Commercial: 5 years or newer van with at least 96″ length and door openings of at least 48″ x 48″
  • Straight Truck: 10 years or newer with at least a 22′ box and a DOT-approved sleeper
  • Tractor: 10 years or newer with a DOT-approved sleeper

What type of license do I need?

  • Non-Commercial: Valid Driver’s License
  • Straight Truck: Valid Class B License
  • Tractor: Valid Class A License

What type of insurance do I need to have?

  • NTL (Non-Trucking Liability): This is MANDATORY. You can either purchase through C&B to be settlement-deducted or from an outside company. If you purchase your own it must say Non-Trucking Bodily Injury/Property Damage or Bobtail Bodily Injury/Property Damage on certificate with $1,000,000 in coverage.
  • Physical Damage: This is OPTIONAL. You can either purchase through C&B to be settlement-deducted or from an outside company.
  • OC/AC Insurance (Occupational Accident): This is MANDATORY. You can either purchase through C&B to be settlement-deducted or from an outside company. Gives you financial protection for accidental death and dismemberment, accident disability, and accident medical expenses for on-the-job injuries.

What experience is required?

  • Non-Commercial: No experience required
  • Straight Truck: At least three months OTR in the last 12 months
  • Tractor: At least six months of verifiable OTR in the previous 12 months

What are the age requirements?

  • Non-Commercial: At least 21 years old
  • Commercial: At least 23 years old

Do you contract with drivers right out of CDL school?

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have contracts with recent graduates.

How many miles a week will I get?

As an Independent Contractor, that is entirely up to you. To ensure you get the most miles, you will want to accept all freight opportunities we offer.

How long will I be on the road away from home?

As an Independent Contractor, that is up to you. To ensure you get the most miles and money, you will want to be out on the road accepting as many loads as possible. Contractors are usually out on the road on average 21 days a month.

Does Bolt offer benefits?

No, you are a 1099 Independent Contractor.

Do you have dedicated lanes?

No, we do not have dedicated lanes. We do have consistent freight opportunities in the Midwest to all points.

Do you do drug testing?

Yes. All Non-Commercial Independent Contractors are required to complete a urine drug test on Orientation Day. The commercial drug tests occur before orientation in the driver’s local home. All independent contractors are entered into our random drug test pool quarterly.

Do I need to own a vehicle?

No, we have fleet owners you will contract with that will provide you with a vehicle to drive. If you have a vehicle, check out our website’s Vehicle & Driver Requirements section to ensure your vehicle meets requirements.

Do I have to touch the freight?

No, Bolt has no-touch freight.

Can I run for other companies while contracted with Bolt?

No, while you are contracted with Bolt Express you cannot contract with another company.

Can I have a passenger in the vehicle with me?

Yes. You must notify Recruiting and Safety to ensure all required passenger forms are complete before a passenger is riding in the vehicle. Passengers must be at least 21 years old.

Can I be an independent contractor if I am on medication?

It depends on the medication you are taking. Please contact a recruiter to discuss this at 800-545-4789.
